Massachusetts Man Charged Federally Over Hidden Earpiece on Commercial Learner's Permit Exam
Prosecutors allege a driver used a Bluetooth earpiece hidden under exam headphones on a commercial learner's permit test. These are allegations, not a conviction.
Key facts
On Oct. 15, 2026, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Massachusetts announced a charge against a 42-year-old driver: fraudulently producing an identification document.
Prosecutors allege that in November 2021 he arranged to sneak a Bluetooth earpiece into a commercial learner's permit (CLP) exam, which he had previously failed.
A co-conspirator was to feed him the answers. That person was convicted by a jury in January 2026 and sentenced to time served, about 23 months.
Prosecutors say that in a recorded meeting the driver explained the scheme to an undercover agent, including how to pay the co-conspirator. The agent paid $3,000 for the help.
The charge carries up to 15 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine up to $250,000. The defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
