North Carolina's 41-cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline and diesel is suspended from Oct. 10 through Nov. 30, 2026.

Some customers complained that pump prices barely moved.

The state Department of Justice sent the first round of letters to 31 stations asking for a prompt explanation of their pricing. More inquiries are expected next week.

The office says stations that do not pass the savings on are violating the law. Complaints go to ncdoj.gov/ncfuelcheck.

For drivers: keep the receipt and a photo of the pump price. For brokers: when budgeting fuel on a lane through the state, use the real pump price, not the tax math.
