Thieves Steal Nvidia-Branded Trailer and Find Sand Inside
A stolen truck with Nvidia branding wasn't hauling hardware. It was carrying 20,000 pounds of sand meant to fool thieves.
Key facts
Thieves stole a truck with the Nvidia logo.
They figured it was full of millions in chips.
It was sand.
Fremont, California.
Overnight, two trailers vanished from the PlusAI yard.
PlusAI builds self-driving trucks and runs on Nvidia chips, so one trailer carries their logo.
In the morning, the trailers are gone.
They turned up that same day, parked outside an office in nearby Newark.
A friend of one of the company's executives spotted them and just sent a photo.
The thieves cracked them open, found nothing valuable, and ditched them.
Each one held nine tons of sand.
The company hauls sand for testing because it behaves like real cargo.
They say that since 2016, they've never had a tractor or trailer stolen.
Funny. But not that funny.
According to Overhaul, thieves have already stolen more than $150 million in AI hardware.
