Torrance: $500,000 SIG Sauer Load Taken in Fictitious Pickup, Two Arrested
Los Angeles County sheriff's detectives recovered the entire shipment. Both men were booked on suspicion of grand theft cargo.
Key facts
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department (LASD) announced the arrest of two Glendale men, ages 26 and 23, over a cargo theft of about $500,000.
SIG Sauer products were taken in a fictitious pickup from a warehouse in Torrance, California (near the 4200 block of West 190th Street). LASD received the information on Oct. 12.
LASD first described the goods as gun parts and accessories. SIG Sauer later told FreightWaves the shipment contained air guns.
The whole shipment was recovered and returned to the owner. The case is headed to the county District Attorney for filing consideration. These are allegations, not convictions.
LASD has not explained how the fake pickup worked or named the transportation provider. Per Overhaul data cited by FreightWaves, the 200-mile area around Torrance accounts for 37% of reported U.S. cargo theft incidents.
