Washington State: Trucks Over 10,000 Pounds Must Carry Chains From Nov. 1
The rule runs through April 1 on the state's mountain routes and applies regardless of weather.
Key facts
From Nov. 1 through April 1, vehicles over 10,000 pounds GVW in Washington must carry tire chains on the listed routes, regardless of road conditions or advisories.
The list includes I-90 from North Bend (MM 32) to Ellensburg (MM 101), I-82 from Ellensburg to Selah, SR-2, SR-12, SR-410 and SR-542 (Mt. Baker Highway).
Chains must be two-sided, not plastic, and made of sufficiently hardened metal. Carry at least two extra chains, and at least one cross-chain must contact the road at all times.
Studded tires do not replace chains. Studs are legal Nov. 1 through March 31, but they do not satisfy the chain requirement.
Local deliveries are allowed without chains if the truck stays outside chain-required areas and does not cross a mountain pass. WSDOT or the Washington State Patrol (WSP) may stop trucks without chains from entering.
